Lots of homeowners wonder how often they should get their chimneys swept out. After all, here in Texas we don’t really use our chimneys too often. Our winters are short and usually not all that cold. Times for sitting by the fire are few and far between.

Even with limited use, however, chimneys can get dirty and pose hazards to you and your family. The National Fire Protection Association recommends getting your chimneys inspected about once a year for “soundness, freedom from deposits and correct clearances.” If the inspection shows that the chimney is dirty, you should schedule a cleaning.

Even if you don’t have much soot deposit, an inspection might turn up that you have an animal nesting in your chimney or that some other defect makes your chimney unsafe for use.

Every year, thousands of house fires are started due to chimney troubles. It’s better to be safe than sorry. Get your chimney inspected and, if need be, cleaned every year.
