War of the Vacuums: Upright Vacuums

When it comes to selecting a vacuum there are a lot of factors to keep in mind. For many consumers, one of the most significant factors, as well as most confusing, is whether to pick a canister vacuum or an upright vacuum. Unfortunately, the answer isn’t entirely simple, with no definite answer either way. In most cases, it comes down to a matter of whether an upright vacuum or a canister-based vacuum appeals to you more. However, if you’re clueless and new to the “vacuum buying scene,” we know it’s not easy. Therefore, we’ve compiled the main pros and cons of each to help you make the right choice for your home. Later this week we’ll analyze canister vacuums, but today we’ll take a look at upright vacuums:

Upright Vacuums

An upright vacuum is a “push-style” vacuum with the bag attached to the vacuum itself, requiring users to push it along the floor.

  • Require Less User “Work” — When compared to canister vacuums, upright vacuums typically require less “work” and physical strain from its users. An upright vacuum does not require you to drag around a canister system behind you, and since the vacuum itself is at the “foot” of the vacuum, you’ll never need to bend over to get the vacuum under coffee tables or couches.

  • Less Finesse and Heavier Weight — Because the “vacuum” part of an upright is attached to the vacuum, uprights are typically less maneuverable and dextrous when compared to the finesse offered by a canister vacuum. Likewise, upright vacuums are much heavier and “dense” in their composition which makes them a pain to carry up stairs.

  • Easy to Store — When compared to your typical canister vacuum which requires storage of a canister and a large hose (which may or may not fit in your closet), an upright vacuum can be easily stored in your home by simply sliding it into a corner of your closet.

  • Better for Carpet — Most experts agree that upright vacuums simply offer better, more thorough cleaning of carpets than canister vacuum systems can.

  • Flexibility — Thanks to technology, upright vacuums can now offer some of the features that make canister vacuums great, such as detachable hoses — though often times these are not as long or flexible as canister vacuum hoses. Likewise, many upright vacuums have speed settings that allow for variability in motor speed and intensity which allows users to optimize their vacuuming dependent on which material they vacuum. Meaning that an upright can be a great choice for a home with multiple types of flooring.
