Looking for a New Style? Try an Old One!

Home decorating trends come and go. It wasn’t so long ago that everyone wanted to install shag carpet and sleep on a waterbed. Or how about the overabundance of floral wallpapers and big, fat couches?

Given enough time, however, the looks of the past eventually come back around. Today vintage styles are more in vogue than ever among hip urbanites. In regards to decorating your home, this can mean a lot of different things.

Today’s vintage goods were typically made anytime between 1850 and 1975. Go any older than that and you should probably donate your findings to a museum.

If you’re aiming for a retro 1960s feel, check out skinny, monochromatic sofas with squared arms and backs. In the kitchen try using hues of yellow, green and brown for cabinets, countertops, tiles and appliances.

If you’re going for a 19th century style, you’ll have to dispense with the stripped down feel and try something more ornate. Large, gilded picture frames were the standard in those days as were landscape paintings and portraits. Couches from the era are typically big and plush, with ornate backs and plenty of frilly pillows.

But don’t just take our word for it. Go visit one of San Antonio’s many vintage dealers and see what they have to say. After all, they’re the professional decorators.
