Wurstfest: Nov. 2 -11

If you’ve lived in Central Texas for any length of time, you’ve probably heard of Wurstfest.

Every year around the beginning of November, New Braunfels hosts its annual celebration of sausage and Texas-German culture.  As in previous years, this year’s festival will be held in Landa Park and there should be plenty of beer and sausage to go around.

Wurstfest originally began in 1961 as the day-long “Sausage Festival.” The turnout was a bit larger than expected. Close to 2,000 people showed up to celebrate and the festival garnered international attention in Germany and Canada.

Festival organizers soon realized that one day couldn’t contain the crowds they were expecting and expanded the “Sausage Festival” into “Wurst Week.” A few years later, it became “Wurstfest,” the name by which generations of Texas would come to know it.

This year’s Wurstfest starts on Friday, Nov. 2 and runs until the 11th. There will be live music every evening along with entertainment shows, crafts displays and various other community events. Tickets are $8 at the gate and children younger than 12 get in for free.

If you haven’t been to Wurstfest before, take a Saturday or Sunday and head on up to New Braunfels. You won’t regret it.
