Types of Glass Tile

Glass tile has become increasingly popular in American homes, showing up primarily on kitchen backsplashes and shower walls. Glass offers a surprising and beautiful alternative to other tile types, such as ceramic and porcelain. It can add accent to an otherwise static space and give your home a unique, personalized feel.

When looking for glass tile, there are several different options you can and should consider. Here are a few to think about in your search.

Smalti. Smalti is a small, colorful tile first used by the Byzantines to decorate churches. In modern homes it can be found primarily in showers and is one of the most popular glass tile forms.

Clear. Clear glass adds a luminous shine to any space. Since it’s clear, however, you need to be confident about your backing (which will show through) and careful about the application process.

Crystal. Crystal glass is made to resemble jewel or crystal. It can be a great accent but should be used sparingly. If you’ve got it everywhere, guest may think you’re trying to show off.

Cast. Cast tiles are formed when different chunks of glass are put into a mold and melted into a solid mass. The tiles have a textured look which can give visual relief when standing among a field of blank tiles.

Slumped. Slumped tile is made by curving the glass into shapes during firing. Slumped tiles can have subtle curvature or even be used to create a patterned surface.

Bubble. Bubble glass is somewhat of a novelty. Air bubbles trapped in the glass make it very visually arresting when used in small quantities. When spread all over a wall, however, bubble glass tiles might have the space feeling very aquatic.
