What to Do When Your Home Floods

Whatever the circumstances, coming home to find your house flooded and your carpets ruined due to water damage is definitely not a fun experience. When you first realize that your home has been flooded by an overflowing bathtub, sink, or leaking pipe don’t panic. We’ve got the basic steps you should take to minimize your damage and get your home back to normal. Therefore, if you ever find yourself in this situation, remember these steps:

  1. Avoid Walking Through the Affected Areas — After you’ve inspected the damage, don’t start to pace around your home where the water has damaged your carpet. When your carpet is in this wet state, it is more prone to damage and being ruined. Stay in a dry area of your home or even outside your home when possible.

  2. Find and Cut Off the Source of the Water — As soon as you can, find the source of the water and turn it off. If it’s bathtub or sink, then this task should be relatively easy. If it’s a burst pipe or something that requires special expertise, call your local plumber or other applicable professional and let them know about the emergency. The quicker they arrive to solve the problem, the more you will minimize the potential damage to your home.

  3. Remove Any Furniture That Might Worsen the Situation — If you have any furniture or items on the floor that might stain the carpet when wet or cause other damage, you should remove them as soon as possible. Again, taking this step will help minimize damage and make cleaning easier later on.

  4. Call a Water Extraction and Restoration Company — Though this is the fourth step, you should do this as soon as possible (and do the earlier steps simultaneously), because the quicker you remove the water from your home, the less damage it will ultimately cause. Steamer’s Carpet Care offers services in these areas if you are in need of assistance.

  5. After Extraction, Ensure the Carpet is Dry Within 12 Hours — After extensive water damage, your carpet is at a highly increased risk for the development of mold. Your extraction company and carpet experts should take all the proper steps to try and prevent this and dry your carpet as quickly as possible. In general, you want your carpet to be completely dry within 12 hours of the water extraction or else the possibility of mold formation greatly increases.
