The History of Carpet

Carpets require little explanation. They’ve been around for thousands of years, in nearly every civilization around the world. They keep feet from coming into contact with the cold ground and they serve as a room accent. Carpets have many purposes and styles, but where did it all begin?

Archeologists and Anthropologists have found ancient remains that lead them to believe the use of carpets dates back to the Neolithic Age. Around 7000BC, early humans used tightly woven and thick knotted carpets comprised of tree bark, leaves, and anything else they could get their hands on. In addition, they would use whole animal skins to cover large patches of hard unforgiving ground.

During those days, modern luxuries like floors or heating didn’t exist. As a solution to the harsh environment, these carpets would provide comfort, support, and warmth. Over the years, the use of carpets spread quickly. As each new civilization adopted the use of carpets, so too would they infuse their own style and culture.

Antique carpets/rugs today can tell a magnificent story of the culture they are from. From the designs to the fabrics that are used, every carpet paints a picture of the civilization it which it was created.
