How To Use Carpet to Soundproof a Room

Do you have some old carpet (think that orange shag carpet from your basement) that you just don’t know what to do with? Do you also have a room that you wish was a little more soundproof, like a music room or a kids’ playroom? Luckily for you, your two problems can solve each other.

Old carpet was a favorite soundproofing tool in the music studios of the 1970s, which means it’s perfect if you’re looking for a vintage look in your house. Here’s how to do it for your home:

  1. Pick a room without windows — this technique works better that way. If possible, pick a room on the top floor of your home because it’s much easier to soundproof the floor than the ceiling.
  2. Remove any decorations you may have on the walls in that room.
  3. If the floor in that room isn’t already carpeted, consider using a thick shag carpet for the floor.
  4. Use a staple gun to cover your walls with a layer of the old carpet. Staple regularly to ensure that the carpet covers the wall tightly.
  5. Don’t forget to soundproof the door: Cover the door tightly with carpet, too.
