How to Design a Tacky Room

Putting together a really tacky room takes a lot more effort than you might think. It’s one thing to mismatch a rug with a couch or to find some tacky drapes on sale at Target. It’s another thing to design a room that truly offends human sensibilities. That’s not easily accomplished and requires dedication.

Below we’ve given you a few tips on how to design a tacky home and make sure you never host another dinner party again… ever.

1) Choose a Theme – Themed rooms are notoriously tacky and come in multiple varieties. Great themes include animals, exotic locations and foreign cities. But you can’t just go halfway with the theme. Putting up a couple pig paintings and collecting a few pig figurines just won’t cut it. You need to paint that room pink, purchase some lamps shaped like pigtails and find some pig-themed coasters.

2) Frills – Again the key to success here is in taking the design to an excess. A few frills on couch pillows can look nice in an otherwise understated room. To elevate your frills to true tackiness, you need to go all out. Pillows, curtains, drapes, tablecloths, blankets, etc.

3) Faux Plants – Buy them and put them everywhere. We’d suggest at least one per room. And you need to make sure visitors know that they’re fake. Try keeping them out of direct sunlight if possible.

4) Sports Paraphernalia – If you have a favorite team, make sure they’re plastered on every possible space. For those of us here in Texas, burnt orange and maroon always make for great wall colors. If your team has a store devoted to their merchandise, visit that store and prepare to spend the day finding the biggest, most ostentatious flags/jerseys/signs available.

5) Gold – If in doubt, just go with gold (or better yet, fake gold). The more shimmering, gold-looking stuff you have in a room the better. Gold paint can be applied to anything. Table legs, glasses (or should we say chalices), light fixtures, curtain rods, random knickknacks—all of these look great in gold and even better when clumped into the same space.

Unfortunately we can’t design your home for you. To really throw together a tacky space, you’ll need to harness some of your own ingenuity. Hopefully, however, we were able to get your creativity flowing.
