Fighting the Holiday Mess

If your holidays are anything like ours, they can get pretty messy. Lots of food, a little wine and a whole lot of people crammed into a small space can make for one dirty house. So to help you out this holiday season, we’ve compiled a list of tips for keeping your house (relatively) clean.

  • Buy doormats. If you don’t already have doormats, pick some up before your relatives get in town. Door mats trap a lot of the debris that people drag in from outside.
  • Place cleaning wipes around the house. Having individual packets of cleaning wipes at select locations around the house can make quick cleans easier. If you see a dirty counter, just reach under the sink, grab a wipe and throw it away after you’re done.
  • Collect gift wrappings as they come off. If your family opens a bunch of gifts all at once, collect the wrappings in a trash bag as people tear them off. It’s a whole lot easier than finding all the bits and scraps after the fact.
  • Eat at the table. We recognize the fact that there will be some great football games to watch. But when you get the chance, gather around the table for meals. It’ll mean less food spilled on the couches and carpet, as well as more time spent together.
  • Encourage everyone to clean their dishes immediately. Take a proactive approach to the dirty dish pile and encourage your houseguests to wash their dishes immediately after they’ve used them. Just one dish left in the sink can start a mountain.
  • Relax. Sometimes the house is going to be a mess, whether you like it or not. Don’t stress yourself out too much trying to keep a perfectly clean home. Relax a bit and take it easy.
