Choosing a Grout Color

After the long, arduous process of picking out the right tile, choosing a grout color may seem like an unnecessary chore.

However, the grout you choose could change the entire look of your tiling project. A grout that’s too dark could give the floor a checkerboard appearance. At the same time, one that’s too light could contrast oddly with darker tile. To help you out with your grout choices, here’s a brief summary of things to think about when you’re in the store:

Matching – Usually, your best bet on grout is to match the color of the tile. This allows the tile to be the main focus of the floor and keeps the grout relatively camouflaged. To help choose a color, take a sample of the grout into the space you’re tiling and place it against all four corners of the tile. Does it match? Would a different color work better?

Contrasting – As we mentioned before, dark grout can make a floor with light-colored tile seem like a big checkerboard. However, if you’re using multicolored mosaic tile, contrasting grout could serve as a neutral background. Choosing one color from the mosaic might change the entire feel of the tile pattern.

Upkeep – While cleaning isn’t exactly what we’d like to think about when we’re designing a room, it’s probably a good idea to keep the chore in mind. Like with carpets, light-colored grout gets dirtier faster than dark-colored grout. On the other hand, darker grout is more likely to fade from sunlight or the use of harsh cleaners. Grout sealant can help protect grout from discoloration as well as the mold and mildew that tends to accrue in bathrooms and kitchens.
