Carpet Cleaning – Remove Wax From Carpet

candle-wax-removalWith the popularity of candles these days, wax spills are more common. The good news is that there is a method to get candle wax out of carpet if your spill happens to occur on your carpet. This is a part of our Do It Yourself Carpet Cleaning tips.

Here are the steps that you can do yourself if wax spills on your carpet:

  1. With a kitchen butter knife, pick apart the remaining pieces of wax.  You will have best results if you can get the wax that’s on top of the carpet out first.
  2. Vacuum the area to get the remaining pieces of wax and other debris.
  3. Put your iron on a setting hot enough to melt the wax but low enough to not to hurt the carpet.  A setting between low and medium should be fine.  You will not need steam for this repair.
  4. Place a brown paper bag over the spot.  If you do not have a brown paper bag, a thick paper towel will be sufficient.
  5. Place your iron on top of the brown paper bag and apply gentle pressure.  Don’t keep the iron on the bag too long, and moving the iron and the bag slightly back and forth helps to transfer the wax to the bag.
  6. Notice that the wax is melting and transferring to the bag!

Dealing with the remaining stain:

  1. Dab a white towel with a small amount of rubbing alcohol.  Dab only at the stain, do not soak nor rub, and keep your dabbing towards the top of the fibers so the alcohol does not interfere with the adhesive that keeps the carpet fibers bound to the carpet backing.  Repeat process with a new cloth if necessary.
  2. After stain is removed, use the same process but with water on the towel instead of rubbing alcohol to rinse the fibers.
  3. Let dry and then vacuum.
