Can You Repair a Hole in Your Carpet?

It’s possible for holes to form in carpets, and many wonder if they can be repaired without having to buy an entirely new role of carpet. A hole can indeed be repaired just by taking some simple steps at home.

You will have to find a piece of carpet to use as a patch for where the hole is. If you do not have any spare carpet lying around the house, cut out a portion from an inconspicuous area, such as under a piece of furniture or the back of a closet. Be sure to use a carpet knife, which allows for clean, straight cuts.

First, cut out the shape of a square to cover the hole. Then cut out the damaged area of the carpet (in the shape of a square), making sure to avoid cutting through the carpet pad. Furthermore, try keep your cuts limited to just one cut per side of the square, as multiple cuts can result in an edge that is not straight. Use this cut-out portion to determine the correct size and shape for the replacement piece.

When installing the replacement piece, double-sided carpet tape and liquid carpet adhesive can be used. When using the liquid adhesive, you have to spread it on both the carpet pad on the floor as well as on the back of the piece you’re putting in. Seam adhesive can also be used to seal the patch’s seams that might show once the piece is placed.

Cutting out part of the carpet from another location may sound unpleasant, but it is far cheaper than replacing the entire carpet.
